On Tuesday, 27 October, Mary Phillips the well known West of England tractor driver and owner who hails from St Teath in Cornwall decided to partake in a tractor run from her home to Hatherley market, a total run of 43 miles taking in Bude, Stratton,Holsworthy then to Hatherley, and this is to raise money for the Cornwall and Devon air Ambulance.
A few months ago Mary decided to do something a little different, to raise money for her chosen charities, the tractor that she chose was an orange painted Marshall series 3A, which only travels at 8 mph, to keep her company she persuaded her partner Peter to accompany her on this mammoth trek, who was also driving his Marshall series 3A. The pair of tractors left St Teath just after 7 AM, only stopping for a couple of short comfort breaks on the way before arriving to a tremendous applause from all those who were gathered at Hatherley at 1:30 PM. All along the chosen route people were looking out of their bedroom windows and doors, cars and lorries that past them gave toots on the horns of their vehicles, halfway between Holsworthy and Hatherley was a sign on the side of the road, that read," Congratulations Mary", Mary was overjoyed on seeing is this a sign, knowing she had so many friends who were supporting her. Although the weather was slightly overcast and very cold, Mary achieved what she had set out to do. At the time of going to press she has raised over £2000 which will be divided equally between the two charities. |
