BILBO THE LIFEGUARD DOG - FILM STAR AND CORNISH CHARITIES DOG
The long awaited DVD film about Bilbo the beach surf lifeguard dog has finally been released. It has been endorsed by three Cornish charities; The Precious Lives Appeal; The Cinnamon Trust; and Cornwall Air Ambulance.
Loved by young and old, Bilbo is a force for good in Cornwall and a living ambassador of beach and sea safety awareness, for children and adults alike. The newly released DVD film is 90 minutes of amazing film footage of his rescue demonstrations in the sea with the Lifeguards, along with lots of other stunning clips of Bilbo in action, including underwater filming, and facts about Bilbo. The DVD aims to highlight Bilbo’s message of staying safe whilst at the beach and in the sea.
Keeping safe whilst having fun at the beach and in the sea, may seem obvious, but every year lots of people still lose their lives by drowning. Such tragedies could be avoided if people remembered to take more care and not be reckless or take risks which could put them out of their depth in the sea. Bilbo’s message will hopefully make people think twice before swimming out too far, since currents change continuously and can drag a person out of their depth, making it difficult for them to swim back to shore. Also people can get swept off of rocks by sudden big waves. For this reason, Bilbo’s message can help prevent drowning in the sea. Even where a beach is patrolled by Lifeguards, Bilbo encourages everyone to remember to SWIM BETWEEN THE RED AND YELLOW FLAGS, since this is the safest bathing area as assessed by the Lifeguards.
It’s all common sense at the end of the day, but people still forget, and every summer newspaper headlines still sadly report that people have drowned. The release of this DVD film starring Bilbo should act as a memory aid to remind young and old / children and adults to take extra care and never be reckless. Bilbo brings awareness of the dangers of the sea, and has for the past few years been applauded nationwide for his ability to get the message across to children and their families. In Cornwall, Bilbo is a living icon of beach and sea safety awareness. Three major Cornish charities have endorsed the new DVD; The Precious Lives Appeal (which raises funds to build a children‘s hospice called Little Harbour, in Cornwall); The Cinnamon Trust (The National charity for the elderly and their pets); and The Cornwall Air Ambulance (the first of its kind in the UK and funded by the people of Cornwall) are all featured on the box cover of Bilbo’s stunning new DVD.
Cornwall Air Ambulance wrote to Bilbo recently and said (please use quote):
“We believe that Bilbo has contributed significantly to beach safety awareness, and in particular has captured the imagination of children, simply because he is an adorable dog. It is not possible to quantify the number of children or adults who have not got into difficulty in the sea, directly as a result of coming into contact with Bilbo, however we think that any properly coordinated effort to improve public safety and prevent accidents are well worth supporting, and hope that by watching the story of Bilbo on DVD, many more people will enjoy our beaches and the sea in safety” (Community Fundraising Administrator - Cornwall Air Ambulance).
Bilbo has visited over 50 primary schools in Cornwall, and during talks by his owner Head Lifeguard Steve Jamieson (J’mo), and demonstrations involving Bilbo, all the children sit quiet and totally captivated, and they never forget the message that Bilbo conveys.
But it’s not only Bilbo’s message, but also the fact that he has also been put through rigorous training as a lifeguard dog, and such filming is part of Bilbo’s new DVD, where he actually swims out to rescue people in the water who are waving for help and in difficulty. One lady from Redruth states that she thinks she owes her life to Bilbo, for coming to the rescue a few years ago when she was knocked over by a wave, just at the shores edge, but she couldn’t get up and was tossed from side to side by the incoming waves, and if Bilbo hadn’t have been on hand to run down to her, she doubts if anyone would have come to the rescue or noticed the difficulty she had got into just by the waters edge.
We all know of someone who has died through drowning in the sea - the power of water and the sea should never be underestimated - Bilbo is a living symbol of beach and sea safety awareness.
Nationwide Bilbo has become very popular too and has a army of thousands of fans worldwide who have joined his Facebook groups and sent him fan mail and presents in the post.
In 2008, Millions of viewers watched Bilbo on BBC2 filmed at Crufts 2008 as he was voted WORKING DOG OF THE DAY, by TV presenters Claire Balding and Ben Fogel.
