The Rotary Club of Mounts Bay will again be promoting the St Michaels Way Walk as its main fund raising event in 2009. This 12 mile walk with superb views will take place on Sunday, 17th May. It starts at St Uny Church Lelant, routes over the SW peninsula and finishes at Marazion. There will also be an alternative shorter 6 mile route for children or the less fit. Since 2003 this annual event has raised more than £55,000 for worthy charities.

St Michaels Way is part of a network of pilgrim routes dating back to pre-historic times. It is thought to have been used by pilgrims, missionaries and travellers, especially those from Ireland and Wales. They wanted to avoid crossing the treacherous waters around Lands End on their way to the Cathedral of St James in Santiago de Compostela, North West Spain, one of the three most important places of Christian pilgrimage in the World.

The majority of the funds raised from this year’s event will be divided between The Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust and The Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen in Cornwall. Each charity will receive 1/3rd of the money raised, the balance will be used by the Rotary Club of Mounts Bay to support other local, national and international charities.

Jim Blain from Mounts Bay Rotary explains their clubs reasons for supporting the two charities. “The Air Ambulance is a vital service which benefits all the people of Cornwall but it is especially important for the people of West Cornwall where the distance to Treliske makes the speed of response critical. Our Club hope to raise money to buy specialist equipment for the crew which will assist them in operating in the most demanding conditions”.

“The Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen (the Fishermen’s Mission) provides care, compassion and support to working, retired and disabled fishermen and their families. Deep-sea fishing is dangerous and unpredictable. Hardship and tragedy are facts of everyday life in the UK’s fishing communities, and this is nowhere more relevant than in our own community in Newlyn. It is to the Fishermen’s Mission that fishermen and their families turn when they need financial, practical and emotional support. The Newlyn Mission is predicting a serious shortfall in funding this year and our Club is hoping to help to alleviate this deficit.”

Please help us to raise money to assist the work of these two worthwhile causes by registering for the walk this year.
